Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity not only to join a company that is growing while others are cutting back, but one that is about to nearly double sales volume -- and you will help make that possible. You'll learn our business and expand your purchasing expertise as you contribute to sourcing everything from office supplies to production equipment to butter and eggs. We're adding talent to increase our management bench strength and as you contribute to our growth you will be in a position to take advantage of the "upward draft" of opportunity it creates.

You will directly handle a portion of the buying and provide guidance to two Buyers, practicing your profession and leading by example. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant purchasing experience, including the food industry, as well as demonstrated success in a management or supervisory role. We're looking for a professional with initiative, solid organizational skills, and excellent judgment who can take on a myriad of situations and deal with them quickly and effectively. You'll also need strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Overhill Farms provides a wide variety of quality and cost-effective frozen food products, and for 35 years we have been meeting the unique demands of major name national companies in the retail, foodservice, healthy eating, airline, and warehouse club segments. We make the kind of food Mom would make -- if she had a 225,000 square foot kitchen and 1,100 helpers!

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelors degree; however, we also will consider non-degreed candidates who have significant and relevant experience.
  • A demonstrated ability to manage multiple activities and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to maintain a level head and a sense of humor under pressure.
  • An understanding of inventory management methodologies and production control techniques would be helpful.

What's in It for You

Growth = opportunity -- we finished the second fiscal quarter on March 28, 2008 with record earnings up 44% from the same quarter last year. To sustain this growth, we will demand a solid commitment from everyone (we have a strong, well-tenured staff). This growth will provide opportunities for stars to shine brightly.

Career development -- our strategy is to hire impact players who can grow with our company and your success in this position could set you up to pursue a Director role. You'll learn from our VP of Purchasing (to whom you will report).

Great work environment -- we foster a positive and collaborative culture and we are proud of our clean facilities. While we're here we work hard, but once you go home we respect your personal life.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus potential, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes all you would expect plus a few features that will pleasantly surprise you. For example, our medical and dental plans are 100% paid, and our 401(k) plan features a generous employer contribution.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

While the VP of Purchasing focuses on expansion and other new strategic initiatives, you will ensure that our day-to-day procurement operations proceed smoothly. While we have solid systems and processes in place, every day will bring new challenges, and you will interact extensively with people in Quality Control, R&D, Planning, Sales, Production, Inventory, Distribution, and more. Externally, you will interface with customers and suppliers.

You and the two Buyers (who report to you) will divide up the purchasing responsibilities, and your activities will include:
  • Ensuring and facilitating material supply to Overhill plants, including coordinating communications, pricing, and production requirements between plants and suppliers.
  • Enhancing and expanding the supplier base and supplier relationships.
  • Solving supply/supplier issues.
  • Developing and maintaining strong business relationships with customers, supplier, peers, and management.
  • Coordinating effective inventory management, ensuring reduced cost risk of obsolete inventory and lowering inventory-handling cost by implementing strategies.
  • Proactively participating in, and providing innovative purchasing solutions for, various company new product launch and project meetings.
  • Collaborating and developing partnerships with strategic suppliers and buyers and initiating cost savings and other purchasing projects.
  • Identifying and leveraging capabilities of suppliers to implement innovation, reduce material costs, and improve supply and quality.
  • Sourcing business specific materials, as required.
  • Initiating RFQs, evaluating supplier bids, and negotiating pricing for materials and services.
  • Initiating and coordinating supplier performance tracking.
  • Implementing tasks and managing timelines of strategic cost saving projects.
  • Maximizing business resource effectiveness, network capability, inbound materials, and inventory.
  • Working with various internal departments to help research and resolve invoice discrepancies.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will bring an easy going, levelheaded approach to handling the day-to-day issues that arise and interacting with diverse personalities. People won't be shy about coming right up and telling what they need -- and they usually need it right now. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Purchasing Manager, you will:
  • Be proactive about establishing your credibility with people who have been with Overhill Farms for years, and recognize the rich source of knowledge and history these people offer.
  • Maintain a solid "off the top of your head" knowledge of our purchasing activities; our clients audit us and you may be called upon to do a deep dive on short notice.
  • Strike an appropriate balance between standing your ground when you know you're right and remaining open to others' ideas.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
